Earth Day takes place every year on April 22nd.

Earth Day was set up in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson and Denis Hayes. Gaylord and Denis came up with the Earth Day idea as a way of engaging the public and to highlight the importance of protecting the environment. The first Earth Day saw 20 million people across the US take to the streets.

Earth Day became a global event in 1990, and now involves over one billion people in nearly 200 countries, according to organizers.
