One of my favorite parts of romance writing is creating the connection between characters and developing the kind of character chemistry that feels completely authentic. While huge gestures and dramatic moments might be enjoyable, I feel that true chemistry is formed via small interactions. It’s often found in a shared glance; a thoughtful conversation, or a moment of understanding when words aren’t even necessary.

It Starts with the Characters

For me chemistry begins much before two characters fall in love. I spend time learning about who they are as persons including their strengths, anxieties, goals, and weaknesses. When characters feel authentic; their interactions become more meaningful.

I often ask myself:

• What draws these two people together?
• How do they challenge each other?
• What can they learn from one another?

The answers help create relationships that feel genuine rather than forced.

The Little Moments Matter

I believe readers connect mostly strongly with the small moments. A character remembering an important detail offering support during a difficult time or sharing a private joke can reveal far more than a dramatic declaration of love.

Those everyday interactions build trust, friendship and emotional connection. Over time, that emotional connection grows into the kind of relationship readers want to root for.

Making It Feel Real

Authentic chemistry isn’t about perfection. It is about growth vulnerability and understanding. The best relation ships allow individuals to be themselves while pushing one another to grow into greater versions of themselves.

As a reader and writer those are love stories that stick with me long after the last page. When character chemistry is natural and earned, the romance is unforgettable.
