Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month

Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month

May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. A rather broad term, Asian/Pacific encompasses all the Asian continent and the Pacific islands.

When and how did AAPI Heritage Month begin?

      • The movement to recognize Asian American and Pacific Islander contributions began in the late 1970s.

Why was May chosen as the month to honor AAPI heritage?

Two important historical events occurred in May:

          • The arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843.

          • The completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which heavily involved Chinese immigrant laborers.

How has the observance of AAPI Heritage Month evolved over time?

            • In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed a bill to expand the observance to an entire month.

            • Today, the month includes festivals, educational programs, museum exhibits, cultural performances, and advocacy events held nationwide by schools, libraries, local governments, and nonprofits.

Why does celebrating AAPI Heritage Month still matter today?

              • In a time of rising anti-Asian hate crimes, this month offers both celebration and education — encouraging people to engage, reflect, and take action.
